It’s a game of alliances, betrayal, and surprise attacks because on the Risk game battlefield, anything goes.

  • Players begin with a set of army figures.
  • Place them strategically throughout the map in order to occupy territories.
  • Players then try to conquer each other’s territories by invading and engaging in battles.
  • Depending on the roll of the dice, players will either defeat the enemy or be defeated.
  • The player who eliminates all of their opponents and occupies every territory wins the game.

The Original Risk Board Game board consisted of a Map of the world divided into 42 territories spread over 6 continents and was released in 1957.

There have been many new variants released since that time. Variants now include countries in Europe, States of America or even planets in the Star Wars Galaxy Risk Game Version.

To play the Risk Board Game players are required to employ tactics and to think strategically.  The objective being to successfully defeat their opponents and win the game.

However, strategic thinking and tactics may not be enough and in a good game negotiations and diplomacy must be used to form alliances with other players in order to survive and coordinate a strategy against a stronger player.

Playing the Risk Game

To start the Risk Board Game each player takes it in turns to claim a country by placing one troop in that country until all 42 countries have been claimed.  Another more random method is for all the country cards to be dealt to the players with this being the basis for the placement of the first troop or army unit.

Once all countries are claimed, players then take turns to place the remaining play units or troops to reinforce countries and potentially establish an initial play strategy to secure a region or country.

It is easier to attack and defend from a country that contains a reasonable number of armies with the more troops in a country usually the better. There is no limit to the number of troops allowed in a country, but at least one unit must remain in any country to maintain control of that country.

Most risk game players divide their troops to cover more strategic points. The determination of who has the first turn, is usually decided by the player who rolls the highest number using a six sided dice.

In all risk games there is only one type of unit, a troop with different models used to represent different quantities of troops.

In one version of the Risk Game a soldier represents one troop, a horse represents five troops and a cannon represents ten troops while alternative games may use tokens in the form of Roman Numerals to depict different troop quantities.  The play is for players to attempt to dominate the world by conquering regions by playing cards and strategically utilising the armies usually created at the start of each turn.

The total of all countries owned and controlled by that player at the start of their turn is divided by three and one Troops unit gained for each three countries. Extra troops are also awarded for controlling a region, returning “sets” of  cards or using special abilities on cards.

When a player takes a country from an opposing player during their turn they are entitled to draw a card at the end of their turn. The benefits of the cards vary for different variants of the game.

In the classic Risk Game a set of cards can be traded in for extra troops at the start of your turn.

In other variants of the Risk Game cards grant special abilities when they are played which may improve troop effectiveness, limit opposing players abilities, increase the rate at which troops are generated or generate troops when you need them most.

Risk is a great board game that can be played by the whole family that incorporates the requirement to evaluate and form strategies as well as work with other players in alliances and can be a great way to spend an evening at home.
